Our thoughts at this period inevitably gaze Janus-like at both past and future. What memories come to mind of the year which has just departed? First a,:ip foremost we probably recall the golden summer, which stietched in unbroken mellowness from May to October, and soon buried the cheerless recollections of a cold and dreary wfnter followed by a cold and dreary sp:·ing.
