Tel: (0628) 663122 ISSUE NO. 1/92 FEBRUARY 1992 EDITORIAL saint Valentine was martyred in the year 270 and whilst his death is evidence of his love for God, there is no evidence of his concern for earthly lovers. In fact he became their patron by chance. The Valentine customs were derived from a similar Roman occasion in honour of Juno Februalis, on the feast of Lupercalia; an uninhibited pagan festival during which couples exchanged the usual gifts and which naturally enjoyed great popularity for many c􀂎nturies. The mediaeval Church, failing to entirely stamp out the celebrations, installed an air of propriety to the proceedings by modifying the activities of the day and placing it under a saintly patronage. Lupercalia coincided with the Christian feast of St. Valentine, and so this long dead bishop enjoys a popularity rarely accorded to a man of the cloth. Although February is a bleak time of the year St. Valentine's Day traditionally heralds the awakening spring, which in turn traditionally awakens thoughts of love and quickens the pulse of Gordon Fraser and other purveyors of greetings. cards have taken the place of more substantial gifts and one's expressions of devotion can be aided by plump Cupids, entwined hearts and highly sentimental verses or by the more modern direct approach, usually incorporating a touch of vulgarity. Whatever the mode of greeting, it is a day which delights the schoolgirl and the office joker, gives heart to the unrequited and confirmation to the fulfilled; a day and a tradition which should not be neglected by husbands nor wives. Shakespeare wrote, "They do not love that do not show their love." Valentines Day gives us a go.lden opportunity. • * • (first published DPN February 1978) Editors' Note we acknowledge with thanks the support given to this magazine by the local businesses who advertise in the cover pages (note some new names) and we hope you will make use of their services whenever possible. -1- From Rev.Colin Pontin. February 1992. 1992 is the 450th Anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Oxford. Now that may not leave you panting with excitement but it is an interesting thought that in spite of all the ups and downs of life the Christian witness of the Diocese has been going on for all those years and of, course, long before that in different ways. There were various highway matters to be noted; a dislodged signpost and bus stop notice . It is hoped that that a "bring up" system might speed up running repairs such as these and the Parish Council would have a clearer picture of the time taken between reporting and replacing. 2. The Horticultural Society has made a donation of ES0 towards the planting of trees, which with the Parish Council ' s allocation of £100 and the County ' s matching grant makes £300, which should provide quite a few. The Parish Council is considering three possible sites but would welcome suggestions from parishioners . We would also urge you to notify us of any trees which you feel merit preservation orders, so we can draw up a list to send to the appropriate authority. Response to the Path Watch scheme has not been overwhelming. Please come forward if you feel you could help in this matter, particularly in the village area. t3o. dAcactoeu. nts for payment include £50 petty cash, £32 photocopying 4 . The wren wanted to win so it hitched a ride on the eagle ' s back, which was previously the king of birds , and in this sneaky way won the competition. somewhat belatedly it was reported to me that a humming bird hawk moth was seen in a garden in Harcourt Road. There were numerous fieldfares in the area but many disappeared once the frost was over. The cold spell brought water wagtails into gardens, and jays and kestrels were often seen. Sector Minister1 s Letter , Hospital Chaplain, Wexham Park Hospital When ! wrote my first of these letters seven months ago, I was feeling very much a "new boy11 in hospital chaplaincy, in Slough, and around the hospitals. This month marks the anniversary of my arrival at Wexham Park and Upton and with it the opportunity and the need to re-assess; to look back on new skills and lessons learnt, to plan forward and make priorities for improving and expanding the support and care offered by the Chaplaincy service to staff, patients, and their families. The pace of change in the hospitals which I commented on last June has certainly not slackened as we approach launching date-for the new Heatherwood And Wexham Park Hospital Trust on 1st April, 1992. Whatever the pros and cons , the opportunities and the risks, of this venture, there is a deep commitment in principle to the hospital continuing to provide excellent , appropriate, and timely medical care serving and responding to the needs of our local community. Our management team are, at considerable cost to themselves, working extremely hard to make the Trust a reality. Many of you may have very legitimate and real anxieties about the cosequences of your local acute hospital becoming a self-governing trust (as indeed do a goodly number of our staff) and I would encourage you to voice your concer􀅒s and use the Community Health Council to make your views heard·. As a hospital we want to and need to be "customer friendly"! Be assured too that at present we are continuing to re-open beds rather than close them. You may remember that in my June letter I appealed for more folk to join our team of Chaplaincy Visitors, and one of the great encouragements of the last seven_· months has been to see this team double in numbers to a round dozen. Each member visits a particular ward every week with the agreement and support of the staff. They thus provide my Free Church and Catholic colleagues and myself with a dozen extra pairs of legs , arms, eyes, and , most importantly, ears. This does require a regular commitment, a deal of sensitivity, and a readiness to listen and to maintain total confidentiality. The team are, I know, increasingly valued by staff, by patients, and not least by me. I am always glad to hear from anyone who might like to explore the possibility of joining us - you don't have to be Anglican; the present team are mainly so but by default rather than design! We also still have difficulty getting enough helpers to move patients to services both on some Sunday mornings at Wexham Park and -14- also the first Sunday afternoon each month at Upton. Please do let me know if you might be able to help. Many thanks. I feel very privileged to be Chaplain here and enjoy the challenge and the variety of the job and the enormous web and range of relationships involved. I am very aware Of Support and encouragement I receive from many or you in•the local churches. I am very grateful to you.
