Scientists are predicting that bananas, the world's favourite fruit, will be extinct in 10 years. Propagated some 10,000 years ago from a rare mutant of the wild banana, which, with a mass of hard seeds, is virtually inedible, all edible bananas are sterile. Effectively clones of that first plant, they are unable to evolve to fight off new diseases. Black sigatoka, a fungal disease that cuts yields by up to three quarters and reduces the productive lives of banana plants from thirty to only two or three years, has become a global epidemic. To make matters worse, Panama disease, a fungus that wiped out a popular variety in the 1950s, has also returned. Britain imports more than seven billion bananas a year. No doubt, then, of its popularity. It is such a handy, ready wrapped, meal. A ripe banana is 75 per cent water but contains as much as 22 per cent of carbohydrate, mainly as sugar, and is high in potassium, low in protein and fat, and a good source of vitamins C and A Because of these qualities, it is a boon to the lagging athlete and features prominently at Wimbledon. It gives the player the required boost and "You can not be serious" if you think that an orange would do the trick. If a banana-less time should come to Wimbledon, I am not altogether confident that Robinson's Barley Water will provide the required surge of energy. At the Dorney tennis court, players will no doubt fall back on our local fruit, pineapple, although longer intervals will be necessary between games to manage this less accommodatingly packaged reviver. But I am being flippant about a very serious subject, and I know that flippancy in this magazine can raise hackles. Half a billion people in Africa and Asia depend on the banana for up to half their daily calories. Emile Frison, head of a worldwide network of banana researchers, says that the banana is at crisis point, with yields in decline in much of Africa, Asia and central America. He and other scientists warn that the regions most dependent on the banana are facing the tropical equivalent of the Irish potato famine. Black sigatoka is no longer being kept in check, for it develops resistance to every new fungicide. The fungus reduced yields by 40 per cent in a year in Uganda and is spreading through the Brazilian Amazon and the Far East. Most of the banana fields in Amazonia have already been destroyed and production in Brazil is likely to fall by 70 per cent. Genetic engineering may be the only answer and scientists led by Mr. Frison have announced plans to sequence the genetic blueprint of the banana within five years, focusing on inedible wild bananas, many of which are resistant to black sigatoka. But large producers have refused to back the research because of costs and fears that consumers will not accept a GM banana. I remember being denied bananas in WWII. Because they are not our staple diet it was no life threatening loss, just one more thing we had to do without. It was a great day when, after the war, they eventually arrived back in Britain. I recall my first post war banana, they were still in short supply and rationed out by the greengrocer. I was allowed one, which cost 112d. It was rather overripe so I took it home and spread it on a slice of bread. Delicious. One of the fruits of victory! It is hard to accept that banana barren years may return. -1- Church Services in March 2003 Sunday 2nd 9.30am Holy Communion (said BCP) 1 1.00am Family Service 6.30pm Service led by 'Attitude' youth group Ash Wednesday 5th 10.00am Holy Communion (BCP) 8.00pm Riverside Team Holy Communion Friday ?"' 7.30pm Women's World Day of Prayer Service Sunday 9th 9.30am Holy Communion 1 1.00am Family Communion with children's groups I 1 .00am Morning Worship Sunday 16"' 9.30am Holy Commtmion 1 1.00am Combined Worship with children's groups Sunday 23rd 9.30am Family Worship I 1.00am Holy Commtmion with children's groups 1 1.00am Holy Commtmion Mothering Sunday 30'" 1 1.00am Combined Family Service St.James the Less Dorney St.John the Baptist Eton Wick St.John the Evangelist Eton St.John the Evangelist Eton St. Thomas' Colnbrook St.John the Baptist Eton Wick St.James the Less Dorney St.John the Baptist Eton Wick St.John the Evangelist Eton St.James the Less Dorney St.John the Baptist Eton Wick St.James the Less Dorney St.John the Baptist Eton Wick St.John the Evangelist Eton St.John the Baptist Eton Wick St.James Annual Parochial Church Meeting Monday 31st March 8pm at the Eton Dorney Centre Come and hear about the worlc of our church over the past year and our plans for the future. Electoral roll application forms are available from St.James church and should be returned to Joy Richmond asap. ,------------------------------------------------- - ----- Greetings from the Ministry Team (This time from Alison Hassan, LLM) Recently we were in Dorney church and while there I was looking at the main stained glass window, with Jesus Christ right in the centre. Seeing this brought powerfully home to me how very much we ALL need to have and keep Jesus at the centre of our lives. What might this mean in the context of our individual lives? I am not suggesting that we should drop all that we do in our daily life and spend the days on our knees in prayer. Of course not. You may be young or old, well off or hard up, anxious about all sorts of things or finding life a breeze . You may work for a living, be retired or even a 'gentleman ofleisure' however that may be construed. Whatever your circumstances, the best way for you is to have Jesus at the centre of your life. Of course, your life carries on outwardly the same but inwardly so much more at peace, so much more contented and happy as you live the way that Jesus has for you. I know this for myself and know that Jesus then orders my priorities, sorts out how I approach difficulties and is always consciously there supporting. We all do need to consider who it is that we place in the most important role in all we do. I have a sneaky feeling that it can often be ourselves. Why am I rushing around doing this or that? Am I just cramming in extra because it is something that I fa ncy? I know from long experience that giving time and precedence to God , Father, Son and Holy Spirit, sorts out my life into one of contentment and fulfilment. When I find it all getting on top ofme and stop I can see that I've got things topsy-turvy (AGAIN) and so I need to put Jesus back at the centre. It is a question of attitude, determination and being willing to rely on him. . Yet, I needed this reminder so powerfully given that day in Dorney church. What about you? For some years the crime figures for the whole of Dorney rarely exceeded 6 crimes per month with most of the crimes being vehicle related usually in car parks. This January however there were 17 reported crimes made up as follows;- 5 burglaries (all in Dorney Reach) 5 thefts from vehicles 2 bicycle thefts 5 thefts not classified (not specific items such as above) The local police advise that vehicle crime accounts for the majority of incidents, which we know is a national problem, it is increasing in our area, particularly in the pubs and Jubilee River car parks. The increase of burglaries is worrying- these all occurred between 14th-18th of the month and are possibly due to someone targeting the area at this time. Although the police are carrying out patrols in the area, I have requested an increase whenever possible although I am sure you are aware of their shortage of manpower, particularly with other matters in hand at present. Please be extra vigilant and telephone 01753 506000 or even 999 in an emergency. My big thanks too, to my husband Jerry, for his support and hard work in the organisation of these events. Mary Baker. 10th February 2003 Dear Editor, We are writing regarding the 'Kejers' column and in particular after reading the article in the February edition of the magazine. 'Kejers' is written anonymously so ii is unfortunate that we have to chose this forum rather than directly approaching the writer of 'Kejers' with our personal concerns. We feel that whilst this particular column masquerades as 'humorous comment' It may possibly cause far more hurt to the people targeted than amusement to the readership at large when published within a community. The targets are not generally anonymous and are often more readily identifiable than in professionally written columns in the national press. The 'targeting' of a small number of repeated campaigning themes is also unhelpful. The variety of employment of Dorney residents provides a mixed community, which includes, we understand, some of greater wealth and responsibillty than is the national average. Some of these may at some time themselves have had the focus of the national press upon them, their companies or their employees, yet when in the evening they return to Dorney they can probably expect the protection of their homes, families and neighbours. When local residents and their work in or for the village are directiy targeted (perhaps without any approach to verify the correctness of the facts) we believe there ought to be more concern shown for the feelings and the sensibilities of the individuals concerned. We know of two separate instances in the recent past where local services did not reach 'Kejers' exacting high standards and the local suppliers concerned were deeply hurt by the way comments were made in the magazine. In both these cases the failure was through illness or bereavement. It is probable that a speedy recovery was not helped by untimely comments. We do not feel that the recent comments regarding the Eton Dorney centre are in the least helpful. Ged, Sue & Kathryn work extremely hard trying to fulfil the aspirations of the charity which employs them and manage the Centre in such a way as to make people feel as 'at home' as is possible, consequenUy surrendering a great deal of their own privacy. By 'living over the shop' It is quite natural that our friends at the Centre feel unnecessary negative comment personally and are deeply upset by this apparent sniping. They wish to ignore these latest remarks. Our concern for them and other 'targets' requires us to pass comment. The rowing group referred to in the local press and by 'Kejers' have visited the Centre for some years during a time when It might probably otherwise be empty. We are assured there is no plot nor intention to change the Centre into an annexe of the College boating facilities. It is unusual, and some may even feel presumptuous, for us to comment on the contents of the magazine, and by implication the attitudes of Its contributors. We pray that without lirnlting comment or avoiding genuine areas of concern contributors may in future feel enabled to offer a more charltable attitude to their neighbours and of life in Dorney. It rema ins difficult to assess the full scale of the disaster, because our partner organisations are still unable to move freely within the West Bank. But it is certain that many thousands of people rema in in need of help. Christian Aid has already made emergency grants to two partners, the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committee (PARC) and the Medical Relief Committee (MRC) . PARC are providing food packages to people who remain under curfew, and MRC are targeting emergency medical supplies to people in need. Christian Aid has worked with partners in the Middle East for many years but rarely has there been a disaster on this scale. Whilst Christian Aid joins with world leaders in pressing for reductions in military activities, our main concern is for the welfare of the innocent victims of these activities . Your financial support will help us to ensure that our partners are in a position to provide assistance where it is most needed and without undue delay. Speed is of the essence, particularly when dealing with elderly and very young people who are without clean water, food, shelter and medical aid . We will continue to seek information on the situation as it develops and will update articles on the Christian Aid website on a regular bas is. I am on this occasion referring to the feathered variety of birds. A recent report indicated that at least half of our capital, London, now has virtually no bird life whatsoever. Theories abound as to why - pollution, insecticides; even the Mayor's congestion charge. Obviously the balance of nature in London has been clearly upset. Thankfully, in Dorney, we have a good selection of bird life, encouraged by Dorney residents maintaining good sound hedging, bushes and trees. Even a good growth of evergreen ivy, where possible and practical, encourages several species of smaller birds, such as sparrows, robins and wrens, to nest. Thanks to Thames Water, the Environment Agency and Eton College - the construction of the Jubilee River, Dorney Wetlands and Dorney Rowing Trench, along with the planting of more trees, bushes and hedgerows, will certainly encourage and increase Dorney wildlife. These authorities have also constructed and extended footpaths and bridleways to enable Dorney residents and visitors io enjoy our beautiful surrounds and wildlife. Dorney can proudly say "it looks after its birds". Regards, Tony Dixon-Smith ( alias Duke of Dorney - not everybody knows that.) Demonstration Courts will be in action during the day and YOU can come and join the Magistrates to sentence the defendants! Refreshments will be available all day-so come and see how justice is done-join in the fun, there is full disabled access and all ages are welcome. -16- I SPY RESPONSE OF THE LOCAL CONSTABULARY to concerns over the doubling of burglaries in the Parish in January was that they would 'keep an eye on the figures'. {Presumably the spokesman meant four eyes, as a single policeman seems to be an extinct species). Until a few days ago sightings of po1ice in this area were rare and telecommunication with them has remained the privilege of the time rich. WEIRD THE FINANCIAL COST of the Jubilee River continues to escalate. The 1992 estimate of £50 million., was calculated, clearly, to produce the 'cost benefit' necessary for its approval; construction was completed at a cost of around £100 million and a further £30 million may be needed for repairs to banks and weirs damaged by its first use in anger. Already the envandalment agency is suggesting that the channel could be deepened, although this would probably lead to a rise in our ground water table and the danger of flooding in Dorney. KEEP CALM I TIIlNK that a quarter of a million pounds sterling is rather a lot of money for a few brightly lit bumps in Village Road, particularly as eton college offered to provide us with a free scheme not too long ago. Of course, this road remains injwy free because hardly anyone walks along it A more dangerous point is where the Jubilee River goes under and. on a fine weekend, a multitude of uncontrolled dogs, children, bicycles and walkers, cross Lake End Rnad. Urgent action is needed here, but it may be that the whole problem will be solved by the introduction of the proposed Dorney Congestion Charge .. YOU COULDN'T MAKE IT UP REGULAR READERS will appreciate that this colwnn is written somewhat tongue in cheek and at times. with a rather vivid imagination. I am finding it increasingly difficult to match the governmental excesses of recent months - dossiers for war culled from the Internet (but no voting please), armoured vehicles at Heathrow to forestall ground to air missiles fired from Windsor, procedural motions (re the Upper House) put to the Commons the like of which wouldn't reach the table of Dorney Parish Council. And Cabinet ministers still try to justify the whole unjustifiable morass on a daily basis. TOLET UNDER THE NEW CODE of Conduct, Parish Councils agree, amongst other things, that they will not be prejudiced by race. gender or sex. New government legislation provides that sex between consenting adults will soon be legal in public conveniences. It has been suggested that the absence of such facilities in Dorney could, perhaps, be construed as prejudice and therefore liable to the full wrath of a the government invigilator. The search is now on for a suitable sight and tenders for an appropriate unisex building are currently being sought. JOHN PRIOR, NEWSAGENT, Moores Lane, Eton Wick. Has a photocopying machine. Unfortunately, the whole policing system (except traffic) seems to be grinding to a halt under the weight of knee jerk legislation, political correctness and inefficient high level administration. It must be a matter of some comment that, following the vigilance of a local resident and the prompt response of the police, three alleged burglars of a house in Dorney Reach were arrested, but the consequential procedures and paperwork took a reported six hours. The apprehended were then released on bail and the prognosis is that some sort of antisocial behaviour orders will be entered into. Not much for a full day's police effort. It is difficult not to sympathise with our area sergeant who has to operate under such difficulties and constraints. If further expansion of Heathrow were allowed, many people living in South Bucks would be exposed to nitrogen dioxide and noise levels above safe limits. More than 650,000 planes a year would use Heathrow - a plane every 90 seconds. A third ruoway would give rise to more pressure to develop additional airport infrastructure. A third ruoway would add to traffic on the M25, M40 and M4. There have been some recent burglaries, so you may wish to take up this offer. Sergeant Welch's telephone number is:- 01628 601901. Ed. The very agreeable Mr John Akerman has risen to the challenge and currently a number of baskets and boxes are cooking away in his greenhouse, aphids, slugs and weevils allowing we should have something very nice to serve up in July. ...................................................................... Between 1995 and 2000, the country lost 30,000 local outlets-about a fifth of its comer shops, grocers, high street banks and post offices. A further 28,000 outlets may close by 2005 as supermarket chains increase their stranglehold on retailing. By 2010 the phenomenon of dying communities will have spread from remote villages to towns of 3,000 residents or more. The Foundation blames lax planning regulations for the unfettered growth of out-oftown supermarkets that have drained wealth and activity from high streets. In France, local authorities have been empowered to veto supermarkets larger than 1,000 square metres since 1973, but in Britain supermarkets have been favoured over small traders. These are not new revelations and we are all fully aware of the changes that have taken place and how they affect us individually and communally. The Foundation's report goes on to give many more depressing statistics, but I do not think the out-of-town supermarket is solely to blame for the decline of small towns. There are several factors that all play a part. High shop rents, car parking charges and lack of parking facilities, poor public transport, anti-social behaviour etc. Dorney lost its village shop many years ago. We were all very sorry to see it go, but a village shop cannot stock all our needs, nor can a village shopkeeper survive on fickle patronage. Apart from an occasional call to purchase a forgotten item, the supermarket won our custom. Ifwe had no cars it might be a different story! We may have reservations about out-of-town supermarkets. We were not at all keen when our local Sainsbury's was proposed, but it didn't take us long to adopt it. I think we have to accept that, with large domestic fridges and freezers, food shopping is bulk buying. The contents of a shopping trolley, stacked to the gunwales with a family's weekly provisions, cannot be carried home by a pedestrian mum or be lugged on and off public transport. It must be a manageable process, from trolley, to car boot, to home. An out-of-town supermarket is ideally suited to these manoeuvres. I sometimes, by chance, meet friends in Sainsbury' s. Pemaps, in time, supermarkets will be recognised as the local community centre! The Thames Valley Adventure Playground for children and adults with special needs, is celebrating its 21" birthday. It opened its gates in 1982 to a small band of children and has been busy ever since. The benefits of TV AP, to its many families, children, adults and schools, is incalculable. The respite, the friendships, the freedom and opportunities to play, to learn and grow in an environment just for you, is something unique and very special. TV AP costs £180,000 per year to keep open. Its running costs come from donations and fundraising. In 21 years it has raised over £2million, enabling over 157,000 children to visit the Playground and make a real difference to their quality of life and opportunities. We congratulate all those associated with the TV AP who have maintained this charity over the years and are celebrating its coming of age, and we join the Playground's 1!13.DY Dorney friends in good wishes for a happy birthday and continuing success in the years ahead. For some time now I have been concerned as to what we should expect from our local police, whilst at the same time understanding that manning levels will never be ideal. We have also to bear in mind that our crime rate is still lower than neighbouring areas. In an ideal world we all like to see more policeman patrolling, even more so when on foot. Our Area Beat officer PC Rob McAllan has increased his patrols around the area, albeit in a vehicle due to the nature of his beat. With the current conflict in Iraq, our police are stretched even further on national security duties and might not be as well equipped to respond to a local incident. Even a minor theft from a shed doesn't seem much until it happens to you and is at the time very important to the aggrieved person. The police are unfortunately unable to visit all scenes of crime particularly when it concerns motor vehicles - vehicle crime representing a very high apportion of crime figures both locally and nationally. Since the Jubilee River car parks have opened, our motor crime statistics in Dorney have increased dramatically with visitors being away from their vehicles for long periods. There is also an increase of vehicle crime at the pub car parks. Thankfully violent crime rarely appears on our statistics, however theft & deception does and both seem to be on the increase, - many crimes are not even reported. Recently some have fallen victim to a young man asking for money to pay for a taxi fare or petrol. The caller is known to the police and has obtained money both in Eton Wick and Dorney - this in itself isn 't a crime, however he has benefited rather well and even made several return visits encouraged by local people's generosity, or maybe they felt threatened ! ! We really should be discouraging purchasing at the door particularly if the vendor isn't known and never invite anyone in who calls with an unlikely tale that you are not happy with. I am very grateful for those who have reported of persons or car details that they have been suspicious of. We all need to be aware and keep an eye out for things that don't seem correct or are unusual, after all that is what neighbourhood watch is all about - it is for the benefit of the community and your information could tie up with other reports. -4- I would encourage the reporting of all crimes to the police, if this isn't effected our statistical information is incorrect and reduces our case for more police coverage. For a long time I have played down the crime figures in Dorney, they really have been lower than the surrounding areas however times are changing and residents must rethink security and take a look around, - does their property stand out as vulnerable / do you have an alarm box fitted / have the dustbin sacks been left stuffed in the hedge for days / is the garage door ajar / are garden tools accessible that might be used as implements to gain entry / is there a ladder left outside, are there keys left in the door or even in the ignition of the car - this could be a long list ! CCTV is now much more prominent in towns these days and is very much more effective as a deterrent, this has driven the criminals away to softer targets such as Dorney. We really must make life more difficult for these criminals, some will have travelled many miles to commit their crimes and they have absolutely no conscience. Regarding the Neighbourhood Watch itself, I have been involved in running our scheme for some years and used to have several people to assist me. We would approach new residents to offer them the chance of joining the scheme and provide them with window stickers and information packs. For some time now I have had to manage on my own, keeping in touch with the police, attending meetings and produce the occasional newsletter. Ifwe are to raise the profile lo meet the current situation I must have some help and appeal for either co-ordinators or people to distribute any newsletters. To be effective, co-ordinators will be required to cover about 20 houses. Not a lot of time is required from co-ordinators who would be the contact between the houses in your part of the scheme and myself to feed and receive relevant information. It is your I our Neighbourhood Watch. If you can assist, I can be contacted on 625407 and will be pleased to hear from you. They have lived for a long time in Dorney and contributed so much to the life of the village. It takes a great deal of time and energy to sit on committees, chair meetings and organise all the various activities that go into making a village a real place to live. I always felt that Dot and Peter did much to make this so. I, for one, will miss their smiling faces and friendly banter and I wish them well in their new surroundings. Yours sincerely, Sandy McCabe. From the Maidenhead Advertiser 28/3/03. Races increase for regatta Organisers of the Marlow Regatta have decided to increase the number of races in this year's event, at Dorney Lake on Saturday, June 2 1 . They will be staging lightweight events for the first time, and an increased range of competitions for juniors. In the long term, organisers plan to increase the event to two days next year and offer a full range of international level events by 2005. The increase in events follows the news that the lake will host the world rowing championships in 2006. Regatta committee member John Yeatman said: "As the only internationally recognised regatta currently being held at Dorney Lake, Marlow is uniquely positioned to offer national squads essential racing experience at the lake in the run up to 2006. Over the next three years, Marlow Regatta anticipates growing into a major international sporting event, catering for a large number of international competitors in addition to the UK's elite club crews. IBtimately, Marlow hopes to recreate the types of conditions and racing environment that crews can expect to encounter at the world championships." The regatta moved to Dorney Lake from its traditional location on the Thames in Marlow in 2001. News ofSID's forthcoming visit to the parish was announced at the annual parish meeting on the I 9th March, and so you may have been prepared not to be taken unawares by SID's presence. SID is a Speed Indicating Device, which was set up at four locations along Lake End Road/Village Road during this four day period and was operated by Parish Councillors Graham Easton and Brian Hoare. The object of the exercise was, I presume, to assess the need for some form of traffic calming (i.e. slowing down). I understand that it is difficult to draw firm conclusions from the small sample taken, but the Survey produced some interesting statistics. 70% of traffic entering Dorney from the Common was within the speed limit at the end of the Memorial Garden. By contrast, the majority of vehicles entering Dorney from the west were speeding. On the stretch opposite Dorney Centre 65% exceeded 30mph. Further on in the centre of the village, 57% of vehicles were still speeding. Those most frequently speeding were driving 4x4s, MPV's or large saloon cars. Professional drivers oflarge vehicles, lorries and coaches, without exception, observed the speed limit. Young women drivers were the largest group of those driving over 40mph (school run?). Speeds increased at peak traffic flow times. Of the 140 I vehicles observed, 526 were travelling over the speed limit. Of the 526:- 433 were travelling between 30 and 40mph. 93 over 40mph The majority of watchful drivers slowed on approaching the indicator, suggesting that investment in a permanent installation would be the most effective way of slowing traffic. Early in the year, some walkers were rather put out when harried by cyclists along public footpath No.5 Dorney. This is the path that runs across the field from Dorney Reach towards the Pineapple and forms part of the diversion of the Jubilee River path. Path No. 5, at that time, was strictly for walkers - not that cyclists observe such strictures! With effect from 4th March, footpath No. 5 was designated a Cycle Track and use will be shared with pedestrians. It is to have a width throughout of 3 metres, sufficient to accommodate the joint rights of passage in perfect harmony. The multiplication of Canada Geese continues apace. A report from Milton Keynes tells of excessive numbers, around 1,000, with groupings of 200 to 300 in one place at a time. The fouling is causing a health hazard in the city's parks. At present, park staff are just managing to keep the population from growing even more by putting liquid paraffin on eggs to stop them hatching. (Brave Men!) They are asking the public to stop feeding the geese. -1- Celebrating the feast of Pentecost There was a time not so long ago (wel l, sometime in the last century) when 'Wh􀁁-Sunday' and 'Whit-Monday' were on one and the same weekend. That all changed and if you read this at the beginning of June the secularised 'Late Spring Bank Holiday' (what an inspiring title! ) will be behind us and we will be just a few days away from celebrating the Christian festival or feast of "WhitSunday' or 'Pentecost' when we remember the dramatic event of the Holy Spirit coming to the early church. What might be an appropriate way to celebrate this landmark in the Christian calendar? Tongues of fire alighting on shoulders and roa ring winds are dramatic manifestations full of excitement as befit the arrival of the Holy Spirit in power. But now, today, after some two thousand years It seems Imperative that Christ's followers learn again to live the wonder of that day. Annually singing (possibly with lack of inspiration) ... 'Come Holy Ghost, our souls Inspire' hardly seems enough for such a tremendous avant Balloons and streamers seem more suited to a children's party, along with sausages, jelly and lea cream. How best than might we celebrate with reality and truth? First, it is worth asking, 'Do our hearts truly rejoice?' The world knowa Christmas is special. The world knowa Easter is special. The Christian knowa Pentecost Is special. In the prosaic and secular world Is this event too strange for modem disciples to grasp? Are our emotions not engaged? Are our imaginations so closed to the amazing? Are our modem minds too tightly locked against the mysterious? Perhaps we are truly unable to live that moment Unable to hear and feel the rushing wind, are we now too protected by religious double glazing and windproof fabric? Might we now be spiritually too cold to see the tongues of fire? Perhaps it all seems too dangerous and we are too fearful:- too fearful that the Holy Spirit will lead us on to uncharted and exciting adventures. The world needs hearts open to receive the miraculous, the wonderful, the mysterious gifts of God as well as his more comfortable gifts of compassion and love. Real heartfelt and open celebration of this feast of the coming of the Holy Spirit could be the start. I hope you enjoyed the Bank Holiday to the full and pray that your hearts may be open to receive God's Pentecost gifts in all their fullness. KATHLEEN FERRIER (1912 - 1953) - CONTRALTO. This year is the 50th anniversary of the death of England's Kathleen Ferrier, the world's finest contralto singer. Born near Preston in Lancashire in 1912, it wasn't until later in her short life that her true singing talent was discovered and appreciated. Sadly, illness cut short her life in 1953. However, her wonderful contralto voice, which is quite unique, lives on. I would urge all lovers of good mnsic to tune in to BBC Radio 3 or Classic FM and make their request to hear contralto Kathleen Ferrier singing such tunes as "Blow the Wind Southerly", "What is Life", "My Bonny Lad" and many others. The purity and control of her wonderful voice is awesome and a pleasure to hear. So let's hear it for Kathleen, our true "English Rose" • red of course, for England and Lancashire. Previous mauning promises remaining unfulfilled, this seemed to be the only way that Dorney could have its own policeman. Eventually, however, it was found that it would be more expensive than anticipated, the replicas being available only in pairs. WATER PROBLEM The envandlement agency attitude to our concerns relating to the Jubilee River is currently somewhat less helpful than were its representatives at the Annual Parish Meeting in March. They are no further forward in dealing with problems aired at that meeting. Lake End Road verges will be cleared, graded and seeded, bnt much good will that do, as verge parking is not their concern and we shall have to talk to the County Council. Our fault really, as we only wanted a small car park; and isn't it fortunate that they laid an area of concrete opposite which can be used by 4 wheelers, which can be dangerously reversed into motorists speeding along the road. Cress Brook and Lots Hole? Oh dear! They got their hydrology wrong and ground water is being generally uncooperative and running uphill like at the Chelsea Flower Show. So they will do their best but... ..... GRASS ROUTES At last the S Bucks cutting contractors have understood that Harcourt Road grass 􀆂 on the cutting map; but overall have managed to get two weeks behind in the dry period of almost a month. Much time has been spent agreeing a map and programme, only for one or other to be ignored from the start. Promises that the contractors will catch up and, by now, be operating to the original schedule seem to have fallen, dare I say, by the wayside. And, of course, the weather during May has been unconducive to an acceptable cutting fm ish. Maybe next year. VOICES IN HARMONY The concert on 16th May was a chance for people to see our beautiful church and to listen to music in lovely surroun dings. It was a most enjoyable evening and we thank 'Voices in Harmony', our organist, Mike Town and all who participated in its success. £150 was donated to Christian Aid and £136 to Dorney church. Hambleden, a lovely English village (after Dorney) is well worth a visit for scenery, peace and tranquillity. Couple that with Vaughan Williams's 'Lark Ascending' and you have a perfect picture. The Midsomer Murders series, and the James Bond films are produced at Pinewood Studios, Iver. I understand they are looking for a new James Bond - what a wonderful chance to take the most beautiful girl for a spin. I refer to the Aston Martin, though I would insist on the shooting brake (estate) version, for as most ladies know, there is more room in the back for. . . . . .a h, you've remembered . . . . . . .t he shopping! Now, back to nettles and butterflies. The Butterfly Conservation Charity states that our butterfly population is rapidly declining, due mainly to loss of habitat and changing weather patterns. When did you last see a butterfly? Habitat wise, good gardeners can help. ln the garden or on a spare plot, where possible, some nettle plants should be left to grow. NettJes provide food for the butterfly larvae. Gardeners who cannot accommodate nettles can help by planting buddleia bushes or teazle plants which provide nectar for adult butterflies. That way, Dorney will help to maintain such beautiful butterflies as large and small white; red admiral; peacock; small tortoiseshell; wall brown and orange tip. At the time of writing this article the phenomenally hot, dry weather is not conducive to raising prize garden produce and without some rain and a reduction in temperature this event will be an especial challenge to all prospective exhibitors. I am sure local gardeners will take up the gauntlet, and the watering-can. The garden at Easter Folly has suffered quite a few casualties from the heat. Trees, shrubs and flowers are looking rather sickly and some, I fear, will not recover. As for runner beans - sparse, and old before their time! Attempts at watering have been laborious and frustrating. The water pressure is so low that water struggles to reach the storage tank in the loft and often hasn't the strength to leave the end of the hosepipe. Thames Water must do something to increase the supply to our end of the line. Hampton Court Flower Show in July. This unexpected abundance of awards was all thanks to the careful planning of Mr John Akerman who, after months of watering, feeding, deadheading and serious worrying had two hanging baskets with matching window boxes in tip top condition. On a just-in-case basis, both sets were screwed down, strapped up and taken to Hampton in a convoy of white vans courtesy of Peter and Deano, John's son and decorator. Once at the show our first choice, a brightly coloured mixture of petunias caused quite a stir amongst the other exhibitors. When it became known that we had a back up exhibit, the organizers asked if they could be used in the place of an exhibitor who foiled to pitch up. So our back up set, a mixture of pastel shaded petunias was brought off the vans. The result was an excellent silver medal for the first exhibit and magnificent silver gilt for the back-up set! All thanks to John for his exceptioool hard work and of course his wife Stanza for putting up with him and his baskets! All Councillors must reveal their financial interests, membership of organisations etc., and promise to be honest in their dealings and deliberations. Non-signers to be thrown out and, throughout the country, many have been. Strangely, MPs and the like do not seem to have such a code, or we would not be subject to the current incessant barrage of disparate facts, fictions, misrepresentations and mendacity relating to Iraq dossiers. PRESTIDIGITATION Rejoicing about having our own local policemen, in the flesh, subsided rather quickly as he disappeared to other duties almost immediately and without warning. Who upset him, I wonder? Local crime increased bard on the heels of bis rapid exit and it seems that the constabulary are completely powerless to do anything about burglaries even when they are called out whilst a crime is in progress. Arriving, inevitably, too late, car numbers, prints and DNA seem of little help in apprehending the offenders. However, it is noteworthy that service to Royalty is little better, at least seven alarms having been completely ignored at the royal party in Windsor Castle. Which is just about par for the course. MAKE MINE A DOUBLE The last time that the Parish won the Best Kept Village Competition was in 1969; this year we are second in our class which indicates that, in 2004, just a modest increase in the judges' consumption might tip the scales. Its origins lie in medieval bon-fires of animal bones - and while modem day components may not be as gruesome, if care is not taken as to what is burnt and when and where the fire is lit, a serious nuisance may be caused to neighboun as well as unhealthy pollution from toxic fumes. Emissions With more and more plastics in use in the garden and home, toxic fumes may be emitted if care is not taken as to the contents of a bonfire. Seemingly harmless garden waste can also produce toxic fumes if it is damp and does not bum at sufficiently high temperatures - so that unbumt hydrocarbon particles and carbon monoxide may be produced. Any plastic materials which find their way into the fire may give off compounds such as PAH (polyaromatic hydrocarbons), hydrogen cyanide, dioxins and furans. Chipboards and plywood may emit formaldehyde. All of these compounds can have damaging health effects, but because exposure to bonfire smoke is short-lived serious harm is unlikely. However, problems may be caused for susceptible people such as asthmatics or bronchitis sufferers or those with heart problems. Children are also more vulnerable to air pollutants in general. Alternatives Bonfires are fun, and a quick and easy way to dispose of waste. However most of us have neighbours who may not share our enjoyment of a fire. It is not necessary to burn waste as other disposal methods are readily available. Composting Most garden and kitchen scraps - even cardboard and paper - can be recycled into a useful soil conditioner, saving money on commercial products. Advice on composting is available from the following: National Centre for Organic Gardening, Ryton on Dunsmore, Coventry, CVS 3LG and Centre for Alternative Technology, Machynlleth, Powys, SY20 9AZ. Collection Some local authorities now provide "wheelie" bins in which garden rubbish can be placed - eliminating any excuse for bonfires! In other areas waste may be taken to the local amenity site. If you have no transport your local authority may collect bagged rubbish for a small fee. -6- Nuisance The most serious problem caused by garden bonfires is nuisance. Smoke can ruin neighbours' enjoyment of their gardens, prevent them from opening their windows and hanging washing out and obscure visibility in the neighbourhood and on roads. The increasingly popular garden barbecue is another potential source of smoke nuisance. lf you are having a barbecue ensure that smoke is not going to drift into your neighbours' garden or windows. Controls Under the Highways (Amendment) Act 1986 anyone lighting a bonfire and allowing smoke to drift across a road faces a fine ofup to £2000. Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, it is an offence to cause a statutory nuisance. This includes smoke, fumes or gases "emitted from premises so as to be prejudicial to health or a nuisance". A nuisance is generally considered in Case Law to be an act which is persistent or likely to recur, is a cause of material harm or interferes substantially with well-being, comfort or enjoyment of your property. Prosecution can result in a fine. For a bonfire to be considered a nuisance it has to be persistent. This is difficult to prove as in a specific neighbourhood a constant smoke nuisance may be caused by various people having bonfires at different times. If you are bothered by bonfire smoke it is best to approach your neighbour first and explain the problem - this can be awkward, but may make them more considerate in the future. Immediate recourse to the authorities may cause animosity. If this approach fails, contact your environmental health department. They may be able to take a nuisance action on your behalf. It is essential to keep a record of incidents, and helpful if you have the support of independent witnesses. lf your local authority are unwilling to act a private action may be taken in the magistrates' court. NSCA produces an information sheet called "Pollution, Nuisance and the Law" which explains the legal position in more detail. Minimising Nuisance If you MUST have a bonfire, remember to warn your neighbours, and take the following into account: To limit smoke only burn dry material. Never burn household rubbish or rubber tyres, or use oil to light the fire. Never light a fire in unsuitable weather conditions - smoke hangs in the air on damp, still days and in the evening. Never burn when the wind will carry the smoke over roads or other people's property. Avoid burning at weekends and on bank holidays when people want to enjoy their gardens. Never leave a fire unattended or leave it to smoulder - douse it with water if necessary. -7- DORNEY 8 DISTRICT HOR.TICOL TURAL SOCIETY FRI DAY 3rd OCTOBER 2003 HARV EST SUPPE R 000000000000000 SATURDAY I st MOVE􀀤BER 2003 50 YEARS CELEBRA110H EVEHT BAR H DAH CE ooc»oooOOOOOOO '1V£SDA V I 8th NOVEMB ER 2003 50 YEARS CELEB RA'110H EVEHT LIVE RECORDING 6pm - 9pm BBC GA RDENERS ' QUES11 0H TIME £5 RAFFLE SKATS 􀆗MIPLYNOW 000000000000000 OTHER EVEHTS FOR YOUR DIARV: MOvn•m 21 sr- A.G.M +++ SOM et WW.ERE FOR TICla!TS, FUll'IHER IHFORMATJOH OR TO JOIH phone 77737 1, 603036 or 626972 -8- • Dear Editor, LOAD OF BULLOCKS - RAWHIDE. Wyndham, Village Road, Dorney. Can you handle a load of bullocks? That was the problem recently presented to some Dorney villagers, including the Duke of Dorney. With Dorney Village cattle grid gates closed, one bullock in particular, on several occasions, managed to tip-toe and negotiate its way past the village cattle grid into Village Road and help itself to various bushes and fruit trees. This particular sure-footed ½ ton bullock, could have tip-toed through the tulips of Amsterdam or danced Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker" Suite without mishap . Eventually successful in returning the bullock to Dorney Common (with help), I'm convinced I would never make a farmer. I will stay with the ivories of the piano, thank you. Talking of which, many folk and young ones in particular ask for two favourite piano pieces to be played, namely, Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" and "Fuer Elise". It's good that classical music is being appreciated more and more by a cross-section of folk. Now, back to bullocks. Would you believe it? The next tune to be played on the piano is "Rawhide" composed by Dimitri Tiomkin. OK - get 'em up and move 'em out .... "Keep rollin, rollin, rollin, though the streams are swollen, keep them doggies rollin, Rawhide. Y eehah." Saturday 22nd November 2003 Dorney Village Hall - doors open at 2pm GAMES - BARBEQUE - TOMBOLA- RAFFLES - SANTA'S GROTTO • Dear Editor, HA VE FUN WITH A TOUCH OF CLASS. Wyndham, Village Road, Dorney. Firstly, thank you Lucy for your letter and yes, the loose, tip-toeing bullock was led back safely to Dorney Common. I was very pleased to read that you are playing the clarinet. There 's lots of excellent music for clarinet for you to enjoy from classical Mozart to popular Gershwin, Benny Goodman and our own trad jazz musician Acker Bilk. One particular piece of music called "Blaze Away" would challenge any clarinetti st. The clarinet is accompanied by bass, banjo and drums. The clarinet is played by Acker Bilk; the music composed by Holzmann and published by Public Domain Work. It's a great piece of clarinet music Lucy, and a good target for you to aim at. Good Luck. A recent business survey of the restaurant pub trade found that customers tend to relax and spend more (10%+) in a classical rather than pop atmosphere. I would agree with the result. What is more pleasant than enjoying a drink and a meal accompanied by a piano, for preference, or a tape playing Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata", Liszt's "Leibestraum"; Dvorak's "Largo" from the New World Symphony etc, as background music. But not, I hope, to the exclusion of other excellent background music by such composers as Gershwin, Hoagy Carmichael; Cole Porter; Ivor Novello; Johnny Mercer; Thomas (Fats) Waller, to mention a few, catering for a wider customer taste. The survey proved that people want to relax and enjoy themselves in a pleasant restaurant/pub atmosphere with a "touch of class". I hope breweries and managers get the message. It's good for customers, good for business and three cheers for good music. Regards, Tony Dixon-Smith (D. D.) For the CM>idance of doubt we can confirm that the County Council have now given themselves (representing the school) the necessary plaMing permissions, despite objections from District and Parish Councils. According to School Governors "this work will not cause increased trofflc and parking problems because there will be no increase in pupil runbers: Many residents remain concerned about the current parking (and driving) situation in Harcourt Road and Close, as more parents are failing to use the provided facility in Trumpers Field. FOOTPATH LIGHTING Quotations have been received for the necessory replacement of all 24 lights and a runber of alternotive designs will be considered. In the meantime, proposals for an early replacement of the lamp opposite the Eton-l>orney Project have been abandoned and maintenance will be restricted to bulb replacement only. JUBILEE RIVER Environment Agency representative Tony Proud advised that repairs costing well over £1 million will be complete by the end of November, and the channel will then be available to prevent flooding in Maidenhead. Orienteering, crossing rope bridges, raft-building and racing and several other challenges were offered to the participants. Their sponsored monies amounted to £8,500, a wonderful total. All eight teams liked the Lake facilities so much, they are planning a repeat next year. A number of Dorney and Eton residents and the Chairman of South Bucks Council enjoyed a combined Guy Fawkes and Diwali (Hindu Festival of Light) evening early in November. The fireworks were generously underwritten by the Anand Association which promotes Indian culture. Mulled wine for the grown-ups, soft drinks for the children and delicious snacks for all in a cosy marquee kept out the chill and a clear night provided a perfect backdrop. The evening was not only jolly but also served two very good purposes. £500 were raised for the Boat Fund of Dorney Lake Boat Club, that forms part of the initiative launched by everyone's favourite Olympian, Sir Steve Redgrave, to extend rowing opportunities to 1 1- to 18-year-olds in all sectors of the community and taking in 'Project Oarsome', a nation-wide programme to encourage fitness and fun through rowing, one of the best all-round exercises. The Club, whose President is Matthew Pinsent, Sir Steve's Olympic rowing partner, is under the umbrella of Dorney Lake Trust, the registered charity set up to help young rowers particularly. Anand meanwhile raised money for an ophthalmology clinic in 1.ndia. Then there was a 'Fun-Day Sunday' for participants, parents and teachers. Guin Batten, Acting Development Officer and another Olympic rowing medallist, was on hand to answer questions about the community initiative. How quick is that? Presumably due to lack of time, no mention was made of the current planning applications for a car showroom and an exit from the Bishops Centre complete with roWidabout, on & through the site of the old Texaco Petrol Station . A short examination of all the possibilities suggests that the amoWit of obstructions between M4 jWiction 7 and Maidenhead on this stretch will ensute that drivers will feel as if they are driving in a traffic jam even if there isn't one. THREE WAY STRETCH No doubt many of you will have been following the tug-the-beat-bobby saga initiated by Eton Wick, who were upset at (inaccutate) reports that Dorney was to have its own exclusive Police Constable whilst the Wick would lose their own man and must share with someone else. Latest newspaper reports have stated that, come January 1st, Dorney's PC would also cover Eton Wick; their pleas seemed to have been heeded. Dorney, of course, had been officially led to believe that they would shortly be sharing their beat bobby with Taplow and not half of South Bucks. Now - Pay attention JI Will Eton Wick still be happy if they have to share a man with Dorney & Taplow ? Will Dorney still be happy if they have to share a PC with Taplow & Eton Wick ?? Will Taplow be happy if they have to share with both Dorney & Eton Wick ?? Will he have a bicycle ? Do :)!!!l!. have a bicycle ? Will anything actually happen at all ??? ROWING ROW You may have read, elsewhere, allegations that Eton College is not complying with the laid down conditions of use of the Boathouse. Although they claim that the text is open to interpretation, it seems quite clear to me that the building is only to be used in conjWiction with permitted water sports on the lake and associated training. May I respectfully suggest to the Bursar that he engages me, at modest cost, to row up and down the water on the occasion of any conference, team building, wedding, disco, pop concert or the like; this, I think, would make any function legal, and perhaps more interesting. 1 should not, of coutse, be available for the dutation of my paid Olympic Garnes preparation visit to Athens on behalf of the Parish CoWicil. COMPLIMENTS OF THE SEASON May I again take the opportunity of wishing my reader a Merry Xmas and a Prosperous New Year. Back in February. 􀆬 ri"Jeoomie. 2003 Dear Editor, Wyndham, Village Road, Dorney. ORANGE COLOURED SKY - WOBBLY KNEES "I was walkin' along, mindin' my business, when out of an orange coloured sky - Flash! Bang! Alakazaml wonderful you came by." Nat King Cole could well have been singing about Concorde, except that the concept of Concorde was still on the drawing board in 1 956. To date, only four girls have ever really made my knees wobble. Ladies please, behave yourselves and get a grip. This is serious and you know the rules' The four girls are as follows:! . Miss Ivory (piano) 2. Miss Aston Martin (car) 3. Miss jump-jet Harrier (aircraft) 4. Miss Concorde (aircraft) It was sad, therefore, to see one of my favourite girls grounded and being retired from service on Friday October 24th 2003. One young man of 1 1 years of age sobbed his heart out saying, "I'll never see Concorde fly again." I certainly sympathized with him. Three Concordes will retire to England (Heathrow, Manchester and Bristol), one to Edinburgh and three to the USA. How to replace one of one's favourite girls? Well, Lockheed Martin (USA) has developed an advanced and larger version of our jump-jet Harrier. Then of course there is the new 'huggable' Mini-Cooper car. So, two more lovely girls to replace Miss Concorde? Now there's a consoling thought. However, to ensure Miss Concorde is never forgotten, how about the Ray Noble tune - 'The very thought of you'. Aaaaah' A Happy Christmas and New Year to you all. Regards, Tony Dixon-Smith (D. D.) How often have you seen parents driving children to school while peering out of a tiny clear square on the windscreen? Do you tell yourself that Nit only takes me 35 minutes to get to work," and keep saying the same in April, August and January, regardless of conditions? To help everyone drive safely this winter, here are 10 top tips for getting around and cutting down the risks. ► Allow more time for your journey. ► Make sure the car windows are clean and clear BEFORE setting off. ► Top up windscreen washer fluid - roads are dirtier in winter. ► Use de-icer or tepid water NOT hot water from a kettle, to defrost the windscreen - otherwise the glass will crack. ► Slightly open a window when driving at night - if the tyres suddenly make less noise on the road you could be on ice. ► Keep headlights clean to ensure you are seen. ► Check your tyre pressure and the depth of the grip to ensure you stick to the road. ► leave a greater distance between yourself and the car in front - stopping will take longer. ► Take greater care on quiet roads - the heavier the traffic, the more effective salt will be. ► If you do come across an icy, unsalted road, do not assume somebody else will report it - call the Council's duty officer on 01296 486630. m::1iiEtt;t•d:M.;]m, A map showing the 2003/04 winter salting routes is available at various distribution points across the county including service stations and on!ine at www.buckscc.gov. uk/ highways_ mainteoanc e/sa_l􀃫irig,htm -16- • Dear Colleague Bucki nghams h i re C o u nty Council Policy & Performance Manager {Adult Care Services): Brian Newton 12111 Floor, County Hall, Aylesbury, Bucks HP20 1YU Tel: (01296) 395000 Fax: (01296) 382597 Minicom: (01296) 382488 Contact: Telephone: BartJara Loxton (01296} 382173 (01908} 526728 E..mail: Date: bloxton@bucksec.gov.uk 5 November, 2003 CARING FOR PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY COMMUNITY CONTACT CARD A new card to help caring people look out for vulnerable members of the community was launched at a Community Safety Conference in September. The Community Contact Card gives 24-hour telephone numbers for social care teams, Neighbourhood Watch, Crimestoppers, NHS Direct and Childline. The idea is for people who work in the community and have daily contact with the elderly and vulnerable to carry the card and use it if they feel someone is in need of health or social care. If they notice something wrong, but not an emergency requirtng a 999 call. they will have the card detailing useful numbers that they could ring depending on the nature of their concerns. The County Council is urging businesses such as dairies, refuse finns and utility companies, to ask their employees to carry the carcl. The supply of cards is free, with each organisation being responsible for internal briefings and the distribution of cards to their staff. We are also asking for feedback about the scheme. I enclose a contact card for your information. If you would like to take part in the scheme and would like more copies or further infomiation please do not hesitate to contact me at the above address. Yours sincerely Barbara Loxton Communications & Consultation Manager This letter, together with a Community Contact Card, was addressed to the editor.
